Laos is a landlocked country bordering Myanmar, Thailand,
Cambodia and Vietnam. Like the latter two, it possesses fewer Buddhist
monuments than Thailand and Myanmar (Angkor Wat being the stunning exception in Cambodia). This is partly due to French
colonialism and the Communist regimes that are still in power in Laos and
Vietnam, alongside several other factors. Theravada Buddhism is the main
religion in Laos, with a large part of the population following various folk
religions. Of the Buddhist temples I visited in Laos, Wat Xieng Thong in Luang
Prabang remains an enduring presence.
