Bodnath (Nepal)

From my diary (June 2013)

The following morning, I breakfast with a pleasant, talkative Hungarian lady and her Spanish friend, with whom I had exchanged a few words previously. I discover they are going on an airplane tour around Mount Everest the following day, one of the ‘excursions’ available here for tourists, and at quite an affordable price, too, for those with dollars or euros. Then Laura and Massimo arrive, and we step out to haggle with a taxi driver. Bodnath is just outside Kathmandu, less than half an hour’s drive from where we are. The taxi drops us off next to one of the entrances to the large circular precinct wherein stands the stupa. The precinct grounds are lined with restaurants, coffee shops, and souvenir shops. We cross the short alley leading to the square and, suddenly, before us rises this wondrous witness to Buddhism, reminiscent of the Swayambhunath stupa I had visited the day before, only incomparably bigger...
